Disguised Handwriting

People sometimes try and disguise their handwriting in perpetrating a fraud.

It is useful for the investigator to be able to recognise attempts by people to disguise their handwriting.

When people disguise their handwriting they attempt to change the persistent natural habits of their writing.

The result is writing that is often not very skillfully executed.

Indicators of disguised handwriting are irregularities and inconsistencies. Particular things to look for include variations in the slant, evidence of hesitation, and aberrant letter forms.

People often try and disguise their handwriting by writing with the other hand and changing the direction of the slope. The result usually stands out as unnatural.

Many of the other characteristics of writing remain unchanged.
